| The mission organisers are delighted that Tetley tea – with its Ready
Tetley Go slogan – is sponsoring Simon Murray and Pen Hadow’s expedition to the South Geographic
Pole.
The intrepid business man, Simon Murray and explorer Pen Hadow will make the 1,170 kilometre trek from
Hercules Inlet on the continental edge of Antarctica to the South Geographic Pole without any support.
Simon is set to become the oldest person to make this journey which could mean he enters the record books.
Tetley Marketing Manager Andrew Dobson said, “Our advertising shows people faced with daunting
tasks who, once they’ve had a cup of Tetley are ready for anything. As Simon and Pen’s mission
will be proving this point in extreme conditions, it is only right that we are supporting them in their
quest.”
Simon Murray added, “Tetley tea will be the highlight of our day. We will each drink three cups
first thing in the morning, followed by a litre in a flask during the day at hourly intervals plus another
cup in the evening.
“By the end of the expedition in early February we will have drunk 156 litres of Tetley tea –
1.2 litres each every day - proving that it would be impossible to find a more appropriate sponsor.”
Tea has always been the favourite refreshment for polar explorers because it is essential for hydration,
as well as being warming, healthy, light to carry and easy to prepare.
The Tetley South Pole Mission will raise awareness and funds for the Royal
Geographical Society’s polar archives.
Tetley tea facts……….
- Tetley tea produces 280 million tea bags per week, blending tea from over 30 different tea estates
around the world.
- On average, 99 Tetley tea bags are used per minute – a staggering 7.8 billion bags per year!
- Tetley’s tea blenders are trained for seven years, including many visits to tea plantations
around the world. The blenders taste around 1,000 cups of tea per day to ensure each cup is perfect!
- Tetley’s distinctive taste comes from its unique blend of three teas:
i) Assam teas from the North of India give it body and strength
ii) African teas to give it a ‘red’ colour and
iii) Ceylon teas from Sri Lanka wrap up the blend, giving it a smooth finish!
- Drinking a cup of hot tea is a good way of keeping warm. In fact the whole process is warming –
heating up the water, then the drink itself – which will help to keep bodies going in cold conditions.
This is precisely why Simon and Pen have chosen to drink Tetley Tea on their Antarctic mission.
Tea tasters
- The British buy almost 100,000 tonnes of tea costing £500m per year – equivalent to 32
billion tea bags!
- It’s a fact: 34% of all liquid (excluding tap water) drunk each day in the UK is tea. Soft
drinks and mineral water account for 28%, alcohol 16% and coffee 16%).
As Simon and Pen prove - have a cup of Tetley tea and you’re ready for anything!
