- Born in Perth, Scotland, 26 February 1962.
- His early childhood was spent in the company of the lady (Miss Wigley) who had been the nanny to Scott
of the Antarctic’s son, Peter (later Sir Peter Scott).
- Father - Nigel (deceased); mother – Anne; and brother – Henry.
- Wife – Mary; son – Wilf (5yrs); and daughter – Freya (1.5) yrs.
- The family live on the High Moor of central Dartmoor, SW England.
- Educated at Harrow School and University College London (read Geography).
- Executive at Mark McCormack’s Sports Organisation, International Management Group, in 1980’s.
- First Arctic expedition in 1989 – and has since led over 30 polar expeditions.
- In 1995 he founded The Polar Travel Company – a specialist guide service and tour operation
to the Arctic and Antarctic.
- In 1997 he organised the first all-women expedition to the North Geographic Pole – the McVitie’s
Penguin Polar Relay.
- In Spring 2003, became the first person to walk solo to the North Geographic Pole, without re-supplies
by air, from the American continent to the North Geographic Pole – ‘The Omega Foundation
Arctic Research Expedition’.
- The solo 478 mile (770km) journey took 64 days (17 March-19 May); the sledge weighed approx 20 stone
(127kg); and he lost approx 35lbs (15kg) in weight.
- Plans for his solo North Pole endeavour started in 1989.
